Hi.
Mist! August 2044 kann ich nicht.

p.s.: Leserbrief in der amerikanischen Ausgabe von guitar for the practicing musician, November 1991.
A while back I went to a jam over at a friend's house. My friend invited his neighbor, Walter, and I bought one of my friends along with me. When we all got there, Walter was kind of shy; he just sat over in a corner. He was quiet and reserved. We were cramped into this tiny room, amps, mikes, chords all over the place. Totally crazy but kind of fun. I was warming up, doing this blues progression, and Walter said, "Yeah man, that's it. You got it!" and he kept asking me to play it again. We played through a few old songs and finally asked Walter to play. Walter is an old black person. He is the only black person I know who lives in this very small town. Walter drives an old beat-up truck with a rubber duck hood ornament. I don't think he talks to people very often. His guitar is horrible - almost like a toy. It won't stay in tune, the pickups barely work. So Walter starts playing finally and he plays as bad as his guitar sounds. But something totally cool was happening. His big fingers would fret the right note about three out of four times. His voice can only be described as a gravelly old blues voice, maybe worse. Sometimes he sang into the mike and sometimes not. He didn't seemed to care either way. He played about four songs during the evening. He would only play his songs once. Walter's singing and playing dominated my memory of that evening, even though he didn't play most of the time. That night and the next day I had his songs going through my mind. Walter didn't pretend to be anything; he just played as good as he could. It's amazing how big an influence 15 minutes of honesty can have on a person. I hope someday to play as well as Walter. He helped me realize that we all live in the same world; and we all gotta do our best.
